Student of the Year 2018 – Meet the Finalists!

It’s that time of year again to announce the shortlist for Adzuna’s ‘Student of the Year 2018’ competition! Over the last few months, we have been flooded with thousands of incredible entries from all over the world, all hoping to get the coveted title of ‘Student of the Year 2018’. After months of deliberation, we have whittled it down to the following 11 applicants:

Bowen Guan – UK

University: University College London, Imperial College London

Bowen is working towards becoming an Energy and Environmental Consultant and has already accumulated award-winning knowledge and experience on high-level projects. With the changing climate, Bowen believes that this role will be advantageous in providing information and expertise on energy and the environment for the planet.

Tim van de Wiel – Netherlands

University: iPabo Amsterdam

Tim is currently studying to become a primary school teacher. The movement towards this industry and career has come from a desire to fill the gap between the demand for teachers and the lack of teachers in the Netherlands. Additionally, he wants to provide children with tools and skills to develop their own interests and talents for the future.

Bibata Amadou Sala Assane – France

University: Polytech Annecy-Chambéry

Bibata aspires to be a water treatment research engineer. She currently does a double diploma: doing Energy and Environment at an international institute in Burkina Faso and also at Polytech Annecy-Chambéry in France, to help to achieve her goals. Originally from Niger, she has encountered the issues surrounding drinkable water first hand. As such, she aims to find ways to provide water to areas that have less access.

Federico Trocino – Italy

University: Università della Valle d’Aosta and Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona

Federico would love to be a psychologist/psychotherapist. His love of languages means that he could work across multiple countries – his application for Student of the Year effortlessly moved between Italian, English, and Spanish (and back again).

Aleksey Sunyaykin – Russia

University: Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education “Pacific State Medical University” of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation.

Aleksey’s goal of becoming a paediatrician and oncology specialist. He aims to use his education and knowledge to help others in Sakhalin Island in Far East Russia. Additionally, Aleksey has displayed empathy and determination towards finding more solutions and knowledge in oncology for children in Russia.

Vivek Saahil – India

University: Army Institute of Technology

Vivek hopes to become a Research and Development engineer, an ambition which has derived from experiences that he has had at student accommodation. During a period of water shortage at his student accommodation, Vivek worked with administration to implement a water-treatment system that works without the need of electricity.

Pedro Vinicius Falcão – Brazil

University: Universidade de Brasilia

Pedro has encountered and experienced an environment where people were vulnerable and exposed to poverty. As a result, he enrolled in a course to study Public Health in an attempt to help these people. Pedro has taken part in various projects surrounding the health system, LGBT communities in Brazil and societal groups that are often put in a vulnerable position.

Ann Lunt – United States

University: George Fox University

Ann hopes to become an entrepreneur, with the desire to run a communal arts space that is teeming with facilities for all to enjoy. She is currently working towards this dream through running an online story, as well as studying to fulfil this dream of giving back to her community.

Karen Four – Canada

University: Sheridan College

Karen wishes to be a Scrum Master for a start-up AR, VR or tech company. Her drive to master various levels of digital communications, in addition to upwards of 30 years of experience in the industry, has been crucial in preparing her for her desired career. Karen is currently studying to gain more knowledge in marketing communication strategies and hopes to utilise this in her future job.

Emmie Chiyindiko – South Africa

University: University of Free State

Emmie dreams of becoming a science communicator, having taken part in research projects that looked at metal complexes using techniques mastered from her education in chemistry. Her research will benefit the manufacturing and science industries by creating a catalyst to increase production levels internationally.

Kimberly La – Australia

University: Macquarie University

With a dream of become the CEO of the law firm Allens, Kimberly aims to spread awareness about ethical practices and diversity in the workplace. Her focus on staying ethical and supporting all class of people regardless of their race, gender or sex has propelled her towards a goal to help support the LGBTIQ community and those with mental health conditions.

These 11 contenders are in with a chance of winning prizes that have become bigger and better than our previous ‘Student of the Year’ competitions, these include:

  • A cash prize of £3,500
  • An internship in a top company in your preferred industry
  • A career booster package, which also includes a 1 to 1 mentoring session
  • CV clinic
  • £200 to spend on courses at Udemy
